stART-Eating the Alphabet

For this week's stART project we read Eating the Alphabet, by Lois Ehlert. I'd never read this book by Ehlert. I love all of the colorful pictures and the way they are all drawn. What I love most about this book though, is the use of so many different fruits and vegetables that are not commonly eaten or even heard of by children (and some I wasn't familiar with either).

Joe and I spent a couple days after completing our stART project reading about the fruits and vegetables mentioned throughout the book. In the back of the book are a few pages with in depth descriptions of each fruit/vegetable that you see in Eating the Alphabet. I also picked up some fruits from the grocery store that Joe has never had before, kumquats, mango and kiwi, and we ate them. He only liked the mango:-). I should have gotten pictures, but didn't even think to.

I did something a little different for our art project. I've had window markers for a couple years and hardly ever remember to pull them out. I decided to get them out (I was inspired by Christy) and let the kids have fun drawing some of the fruits and veggies from the book on the windows in our school/playroom. They LOVED this!!

Joe drew a watermelon, carrots, cucumber and banana.

Here is what Hanna drew:

Another fun week of stART. I look forward to linking up at A Mommy's Adventures and seeing what everyone else has created too!

**We also did a project this week based on the book Autumn Leaves, by Ken Robbins. To see this project, Fall Leaf Suncatchers, click here.**

  1. We haven't read this book in a long time. I am a big fan of Lois Ehlert. I have never tried kumquats either. I should look for them. R and I both LOVE kiwi though. Cute idea to draw the fruits and veggies.

  6. This looks like a great book - we'll have to look for it. I really love the look of your blog - your photos on top and your tabs. If you don't mind advising a complete stranger :) how did you do that?

  8. What fun to get to try out some of the new fruit they read about.

Their drawings are great too - looks like they put a lot of energy into them.

  11. Wow, Hanna can really draw. I wish I had that talent.

We bought window markers just last week. I was going to use them as a way to motivate Caleb to want to write his numbers and letters.

Love just about any book from this author as well.
